Okot, ugandischer Schriftsteller, * Gulu 9. 6. 1931, ✝ Kampala 20. 7. 1982; studierte Ethnologie in Oxford, war u. a. Direktor des National Cultural Centre in Kampala sowie Professor für Literatur und Soziologie in Nairobi und an der Makerere-Universität in Uganda. p'B. setzte sich für die Bewahrung afrikanischer Kulturtraditionen ein und wandte sich gegen Diktatur und Willkürherrschaft im nachkolonialen Afrika. Seine als »Songs« bezeichneten satirischen Prosagedichte stellen ein neues, spezifisch ostafrikanisches Genre dar, das Formen und Inhalte traditioneller mündlich überlieferter Dichtung in die englische Sprache überträgt.
 
Werke: Song of Lawino (1966; deutsch Lawinos Lied); Song of Ocol (1970; deutsch Otschols Lied); Two songs: Song of a prisoner, Song of Malaya (1971); Africa's cultural revolution (1973).
